ACCC

Join the Arab Cultural & Community Center for a Film Screening and Discussion of Where Should the Birds Fly? as a part of our Palestine film screening series on Saturday, November 15 at 7:00pm.

Where Should the Birds Fly? documents the separate stories and shared experience of two women in Gaza. It opens by briefly introducing us two the two major characters -- Mona Al Samouni and Fida Qishta. Mona Al Samouni is an 11 year old girl whose family died when her home was hit by Israeli rockets during Operation Cast Lead. Fida Qishta, the filmmaker, is a Gazan videographer, teacher, and human rights worker. Born and raised in Rafah, Gaza, she began her filmmaking career as a wedding videographer and soon moved on to working with international human rights observers in Gaza, documenting day to day life under siege.

ABOUT OUR INSTRUCTOR: Manar Harb

Arabic is my native language. Influenced by my father, I began writing poetry at an early age. In Palestine, exposure to languages is common; before turning 12, I already had heard and had some practice in French, German, Hebrew and Spanish. Moving to the United States for the first time in 2002, experiences with words and expressions came differently when interacting with Americans. Later after completing my undergraduate studies, I return to my homeland. Noticing the difference in style when using language in the workplace pushed me into researching the origins of language. Winter of 2012, I moved to Oakland to pursue my studies and develop my career in art and writing. The quest continues.
